Remote Control - 48 hour film - Tasploitation 2014 entryVoices in your head throw you from one fatal scenario to the next - will you have a happy ending? 48 hours, 3 hungover actors, 2 cameras, and a 10 minute script; this multi-shot, multi-location, sci-fi horror-thriller was way too ambitious for our boots, and way too much fun! |

VHS 80's stylised intro and an unsolicited advertisment for real event sponsor Najades Fins
I used After Effects to create a cheesy, 80's styled intro with goofy transitions and a gritty VHS aesthetic for the Championship's after-game broadcast
The championships were broadcast live on youtube to an international audience

Dealing with dealing with loss [NSFW] (2017)
A violent dark comedy about Megan, whose ex creates a cult around their breakup and his own frustrations
Inspired by the harsh aesthetic of Darren Aronofsky's Pi I set out to complete an ambitious short film project that would test all my skills so far
I performed almost every production related to task, including writing, filming (mostly with a steadicam), lighting, directing, audio and creating a prosthetic, with music written by Nicke Howe and arranged by me
As goofy as it ends up being, I'm particularly proud of the performances of my friends and Megan in particular, as well as the overall aesthetic, and I'm glad I was able to complete something like this
Starring Megan Cao and Nick Howe

Project Birdsong promotional video (2017)

North - Pitch Video for series funding (2016)
Pitch and teaser for a webseries about upward mobility and internet celebrity
Planned, filmed and produced over a 2 week period, 'North' was a concept pitch for a web series dealing with the internet as a tool for social mobility in otherwise stangant Australian suburbs
We utilised multiple locations, lighting setups and techniques to film and produce as professional a product as possible
Although ultimately unsuccessful in the Screen Tasmania grants program, we were commended by organisers for our professional aesthetic and pitch

Horrific circumstances unfold through 'found footage' of a police interview
Having learned our lessons regarding shooting at multiple locations during the 2014 Tasploitation, we attempted to achieve a higher level of pollish for the short time frame by telling a more contained story, leaning into the genre trope of found-footage, and letting performance and narrative take a stronger role

The Stan Show with Sean Edward Whelan - Live at the Homestead (2015)
I was asked to record sound and visuals for a collaberation between Hobart musician The Stan Show and Hobart illustrator Sean Edward Whelan
Armed with just a few hours notice, two Nikon D7000's and a tascom stereo dictaphone I was able to capture a unique live performance in support of a friend and the 2015 small press zine fair
Performance by Tristan Barnes as "The Stan Show"
Art by Sean Edward Whelan

Eggs - a short film about life and cooking
Filmed and edited over a week and based on a short story by Hobart author Michael Blake, Eggs demands more of its audience just like it demanded more of me than any other project to date.
Inspired by Gus Van Sant's The Discipline of D.E. , a short film adaption of a William Burroughs story, I remembered a chapter from a novella my housemate had written about Sylvia Plath and making choices; it seemed perfect for the format, so I edited it and got him to read it into a mic, then set about filming my poor fiancé over a weekend using only my Nikon D7000 and a set of flimsy lights borrowed from the university
The final film is full of mistakes, but I'm still happy with the outcome; I think most importantly, it was a good story, and that comes through most of all.

Remote Control - 48 hours to make a horror film
48 hours, 3 hungover actors, 2 cameras, and a 10 minute script; this multi-shot, multi-location, sci-fi horror-thriller was way too ambitious for our boots, and way too much fun!
Remote Control was our entry into the 48hr Tasploitation film challenge. We were given 'sci-fi' as a genre, and so knowing nothing about special effects, decided to take an esoteric route, creating a short film about workshopping a horror film.
The film consists of three producers trying at a late stage re-write for a horror film, tasked with killing off a character, however their unlucky protagonist may not be so fictional...
Messy, shaky, and thrown together, Remote Control was both a nightmare and a laugh as we finished up filming at 3am on Sunday morning with the dedicated lead actor, Cam McKenzie, submerged in his bath, at least an hour after the hot-water had given out, leaving me to rise early with roughly 12 hours of (non-stop) editing to pull it all together.

Scared of Boys - Music Video for Enola Fall (2013)
Hacking together approximately 80 cardboard and acrylic frames to create a unique visual effect in camera so the song lyrics appear in the lights of the scenes while time intensive led to a clip made for loose-change and favours.
As a member of Hobart band 'Enola Fall' at the time, I had a vested interest in spending as little money on a film clip as possible. To that end, I experimented for a few weeks using false apertures over my DSLR lenses to create textured-bokeh out of the lights in the scenes.
Eventually I arrived at printing a negative image of text from the song's lyrics (i.e. clear text, black background) on thin acrylic sheet, then making individual phrases into small slides that I could fasten to the front of my lens using an ad-hoc cardboard harness to hold them in place and stop any light leaking in the sides.
As long as the clear part of the slide (which the light goes through) was larger than the lenses' aperture, whatever shape the clear part was will become the shape of the bokeh in the image. However this did let much less light into the camera than normal, and due to shooting at night, some scenes are poorly lit and coloured.
Overall I still think it's a visually interesting and aesthetically unique film and I'd be able to improve on the process if I were to do it again.
